        blu-ray

In a surprising move, 20th Century Fox announces that it will allow digital downloads of its  movies to Android devices.

Starting in October, customers who purchase a Blu-ray disc of a movie by 20th Century Fox will be able to download the content to their computer, which can then be loaded onto the device. The first film that will offer this option is going to be "X-Men: First Class" (which can already be pre-ordered).

Here is a quote from Vincent Marcais, who is Senior Vice President of Marketing for the film studio:

“Given its strong growth as a mobile operating system, the support for Android is an important move for us because it further enhances Blu-ray discs as the best way to get your movies to all your screens.”

This is great news for Android users as it offers just one more way to get high quality content on the phone or tablet. With Netflix expanding, Google Video rentals soon to debut and movie studios such as 20th Century Fox allowing digital downloads, the content catelog continues to improve.

iOS 4.3.1 jailbreakA jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie — who else? — has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you’ll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week — but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Maybe Apple’s updated security mechanisms will finally keep hackers at bay!

Ask DLS: What’s your primary Web browser?

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four “major” browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

                      What’s your primary Web browser?

DropSpace adds real Dropbox sync to Android

                            dropspace

Dropbox offers a lovely client for Android, but it’s lacking true “sync” functionality. You can merely browse your Dropbox, pull files into the device, and manually upload specific files.

DropSpace is a little Android app that makes Dropbox on Android work like Dropbox – that is, you get real folder synchronization in the background.

When you run the app you’re prompted for your Dropbox credentials. After logging in to Dropbox, you get to select which device folders you’d like to sync to the cloud. It’s a straightforward mapping process: You select a folder on the device, and then specify where in Dropbox it should go.

The interface is rather clunky, at least for now. The biggest annoyance is that you can’t edit your “sync list”: if you add a folder and then wish to remove it, you must delete the entire list of folders and start over.

In terms of functionality, it works quite well. I tested it with the camera folder, and it was nice to be able to take my photos using the lean default Camera app and have them sync up to the cloud instantly.

                              farragomate

You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players’ nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can’t vote for your own creation, of course. There’s in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it’s a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).
