Kork Case for iPad Review

The Gadgeteer recently posted a news item about an unusual iPad case from AProdukt. The Kork case is a back cover made of cork. AProdukt says the thicker, rounded form of the Kork is ergonomically designed to make holding the iPad easier. When AProdukt offered a Kork case for review, Julie offered it to me. [...]

      Mgnet.me, magnet URI shortener

Magnet URIs, which are a way of downloading torrents without actually downloading a .torrent file, are a fantastic idea, but a bit… long-winded. They’re regularly over 200 characters long, making them too long to share with Twitter. Email clients can break them by inserting line breaks, and most annoyingly, very few IM clients make magnet links ‘clickable.’

Mgnet.me, as you can tell from its ruthlessly eviscerated noun, shortens magnet URIs into something a lot more manageable. The Pioneer One episode 1 magnet URI goes from 148 characters, down to just 20: http://mgnet.me/ZQx. The best bit, though, is that you can assign an ‘alias,’ which nicely cuts through the magnet URI obfusctation — for example: http://mgnet.me/.pioneer.

Of course, the main problem is that you have to head over to Mgnet.me to shorten URIs — but don’t worry, there’s a Mgnet.me API! As you can see on Sailr, a magnet-only torrent search engine, shortened URLs are now easily available. Now we just need integration with a big-name BitTorrent client, like uTorrent, and magnet shortening will really take off.

If you have Rdio (and a Mac), you’ll wanna download their new desktop app, which takes all the browser-based features of the streaming music service and gives it an iTunes-style UI and a home on your dock. You can’t download tracks for offline listening or merge your local MP3 library with your streaming collection, but it will manage any MP3s you purchase and download via Rdio. And from the looks of it, the app loads the same web content you’d find on their site, but now you can use the media playback keys on your keyboard to control playback and you don’t have to go tab hunting in your browser to find Rdio. You can download it here. [Rdio] More »

              Panguso search engine

Not content with by far the largest cellular network in the world, state-owned China Mobile has joined forces with the state-owned Xinhua News Agency to create the state-owned search engine Panguso. Their new offering pits itself against the current incumbent, Baidu, which has 75% of the search market in China.

The idea is that Xinhua, which is one of the world’s largest news agencies, will provide the content — and judging by the front page, news is definitely front and center at the moment. China Mobile, with its 600 million mobile subscribers, will provide the technological expertise, and maintain an SMS bridge between the search engine and its mobile users.

This isn’t just about mobile, though: China has 450 million Internet users, and Panguso’s launch is obviously the Chinese government’s attempt to grab back some of the market share from Baidu and Google. Google, incidentally, decamped from China to Hong Kong back in March 2010 — and it was only in August 2010 that China Mobile and Xinhua begun work on Panguso. Baidu has enjoyed a virtual monopoly since its inception in 2000.

In a day and age where we have grown accustomed to the democratization and decentralization of information, it seems rather odd to see the emergence of a state-owned search engine. China already has a very strict policy on censoring politically-sensitive material, which Baidu strictly abides by — so unless it wants to further extend its control of information inside its borders, why would the Chinese government be interested in offering an alternative?

If we fast forward a few years, to when the Chinese government eventually blocks Baidu, a whole 20% of the Internet’s populace will be forced to use a state-owned search engine. Xinhua, the government-run news agency, would of course become the de facto source of news for every cellular and Internet user in China. You can probably imagine what it would be like to have just a single news source in the U.S. — now imagine that, plus a firewall that prevents you from easily peering beyond your border to see what’s actually going on…

                imperfectbalance

Imperfect Balance is a very simple game: You have a bunch of blocks on a “stage” in the middle of the screen, and your goal is to make them all fall off.

You do this by using other blocks: There are several blocks you can use on each level; you pick a block and rotate it using A and D (or W and S for finer angles). Once you have it at the angle you want, simply click to drop it. It’s not an easy game, despite being simple. You need to drop the right block at the right angle and at the right location — sometimes that’s trivial, but it can be quite daunting too.

The soundtrack is somewhat on the eerie side, but it’s not too irritating. All in all, there are certainly worse ways to kill a few minutes.

                Windows 7 OS X Lion

Yesterday, Apple released the developer preview of Mac OS X Lion, the first major update to OS X since August 2009. Two major things have uprooted the computing world since then: the launch of Windows 7 in October 2009, and the iPad in 2010.

It’s no surprise, then, that OS X Lion looks like the lovechild of Windows 7 and iOS. White box-thumping purists will claim, somehow, that this is revolutionary, world-changing, pivotal. Realists will acknowledge that, for the first time in at least a decade, Apple might be following Microsoft’s lead.

Hyperbole aside, though, we should be excited: more than anything, OS X Lion is a glimpse of the future of tablet computing.
