    ccleaner 3.05

CCleaner continues to be one of the most popular Windows maintenance programs we cover here at Download Squad, and Piriform has released a minor (but important) update. CCleaner version 3.05 now includes full support for both recently-released Web browsers, Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4.

The update doesn’t stop there, however. CCleaner is now better at scanning your registry for unused file extensions, obsolete software references, and invalid browser helper objects (BHOs). Cookie management has been improved with the addition of iTunes support and tweaks to CCleaner’s Intelligent cookie keeper.

Application clean-up has gotten a big boost, too — with added support for Adobe Air, Steam, Xfire, TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, Skype, AIM, Camfrog Video Chat, Miranda, Pidgin, Yahoo Messenger, FrostWire, uTorrent, iMesh, BearShare, and more.

You’ll find both the CCleaner 3.05 installer and portable version on Piriform’s site.

Google has also delivered a massive internationalization update for the Google Places app. Version 1.1 now supports a total of 30 languages, and it adds a saved places feature which allows you to quickly access your favorite check-in locations while you’re out and about. Your saved places will also sync with Maps and Hotpot.

Samsung gazed into its crystal ball today, and what did it see? The pixel density of tablet screens drastically increasing. Yes, while Apple may not have managed to cram a screen into the iPad 2 worthy of the Retina moniker, it sounds like Samsung may be working on just such a thing, as the company projects that it will have tablet displays with 300 to 400 pixel-per-inch resolutions by 2015. Presently, the Samsung Galaxy Tab has a seven-inch, 1024 x 600 panel, which translates to only about 170ppi, but Samsung suggests that tablets of the exact same size might stretch well beyond 1080p desktop resolutions as pixel density increases, and yet still manage a respectable 8 to 10 hours of battery life. Samsung also said that while it’s still waiting to see if consumers adopt stereoscopic 3D, it might be interested in joining the throng, perhaps bringing a glasses-free tablet display to market in the years to come. Curious what else the future might hold, according to Samsung? Take a peek at our gallery below.

They thought it would be easy, but they were wrong — AndIRC developers reportedly spent the last 72 hours readying the new HTC Thunderbolt for custom ROMs. Today, they emerge victorious, but that victory is bittersweet, because it may signify the end of a generally hacker-friendly era from the folks at HTC. While devices from the Taiwanese manufacturer have traditionally been easy to modify, the hacker community found Verizon’s LTE flagship fully locked down, with a signed kernel, signed recovery image and a signed bootloader. FOF. Of course, if you’re just looking for a way to overclock your Thunderbolt, you probably don’t care about all that. You’ll find all the (exceptionally lengthy) instructions you need at Android Police. Just be careful out there!

                  free web malware protection

You may not have heard of G Data, but the German security software developer consistently posts top marks in antivirus tests. Now, we know many of you don’t like toolbars, but G Data CloudSecurity for Firefox and Internet Explorer is one that might be good enough to recommend to your friends and family who need help avoiding malware on the Web.

CloudSecurity offers functionality much like the browser components offered by many antivirus and anti-malware apps (including AVG, Avast, and Norton). Once installed, CloudSecurity checks Web pages for all kinds of malicious activity — from phishing to malware-infested code and downloads. It’s also worth noting that the G Data toolbar doesn’t noticeably delay the opening of new tabs in Internet Explorer — IE9′s add-on manager reports a total time of about half a second.

If you know people who have trouble resisting the allure of fakeAV pop-ups and Facebook scam links, you may just want to install CloudSecurity for them to provide a little extra protection.

                    read-it-later

Ever find yourself heading out the door when you stumble across an interesting looking article and wish you had the time to read it? Unfortunately there is not always an easy way, besides hunting it down again later to mark the link so you can read it later, let alone from a different location.

Read it Later is a great application that syncs between your computer and your device and allows you to mark a page to be read later, and will even hold your position if you do so happen to begin to read something without the chance to finish it in that moment. In addition to all these great features, Read it Later downloads all your articles, so if you don’t happen to have a network connect, like on a plane, there are no issues with keeping caught up on the articles you wanted to read. For only 99 cents this application is a must-have for anyone who uses the internet on both a personal computer and their Android device. Download information and links after the break.

Clement Valla's Postcards from Google Earth blend 3D with 2D to blow minds

The satellite imagery used in Google Earth is captured in 2D. The terrain that it covers is rendered in 3D. Sometimes those disparate layers don’t line up, and sometimes those results can be quite compelling. Artist Clement Valla has collected some of the most striking examples in an online gallery called “Postcards from Google Earth, Bridges.” It’s 60 images from around the virtual globe, pictures that are occasionally janky, occasionally boring, but often quite moving in a Salvador Dali sort of way. Our favorite is above, but feel free to share yours in comments below.

                    Mgnet.me, magnet URI shortener

Magnet URIs, which are a way of downloading torrents without actually downloading a .torrent file, are a fantastic idea, but a bit… long-winded. They’re regularly over 200 characters long, making them too long to share with Twitter. Email clients can break them by inserting line breaks, and most annoyingly, very few IM clients make magnet links ‘clickable.’

Mgnet.me, as you can tell from its ruthlessly eviscerated noun, shortens magnet URIs into something a lot more manageable. The Pioneer One episode 1 magnet URI goes from 148 characters, down to just 20: http://mgnet.me/ZQx. The best bit, though, is that you can assign an ‘alias,’ which nicely cuts through the magnet URI obfusctation — for example: http://mgnet.me/.pioneer.

Of course, the main problem is that you have to head over to Mgnet.me to shorten URIs — but don’t worry, there’s a Mgnet.me API! As you can see on Sailr, a magnet-only torrent search engine, shortened URLs are now easily available. Now we just need integration with a big-name BitTorrent client, like uTorrent, and magnet shortening will really take off.

                    webgl demo

The Khronos Group has finally put its stamp on the WebGL 1.0 spec, and that’s good news for those of you running Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, and any other up-to-date WebKit browsers. If you’re an Internet Explorer user, however, you’re still not invited to the party.

Microsoft, with IE9 only being available for Windows Vista and 7, is perfectly content with IE9′s DirectX-based hardware acceleration. It will be interesting to see what happens with the mobile version of IE9, too — if HTML5 and WebGL apps take off, Microsoft (and Nokia) will want to support them.

Mozilla’s Jay Sullivan doesn’t appear worried though, saying “Between Firefox and Chrome, people will build stuff.” You can, of course, add WebGL support to Internet Explorer yourself — by installing Google Chrome Frame, though admittedly that brings a whole lot more functionality than browser-based 3D.

If you’ve got a compatible browser and want to see what WebGL 1.0 can do, head on over to the Khronos Group demo site or check out Google’s previous demo offerings!
